Two-time Olympic medalist and eight-time world champion U.S. alpine ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin is no stranger to breaking records – and she’s just set another. With a third-place finish in the slalom event in Åre, Sweden on Sunday, she became the skier with the most World Cup podium finishes of all time, bringing her tally to an incredible 156.
Shiffrin took the crown from Swedish skier Ingemar Stenmark, who competed in the 1970s and 80s. This incredible achievement is a testament to her dedication to the sport since making her World Cup debut in 2011 at just 15 years old. The title was made all the sweeter after a recent fall and the subsequent injuries resulted in her being unable to compete for two months.
Despite missing out on a first place finish in Åre, she certainly came back from injury with a bang. It’s been a record-breaking few weeks for Shiffrin. Her monumental World Cup podium record comes shortly after celebrating her 100th World Cup win in Sestriere, Italy, last month. As the first person to ever hit triple digits, it’s no wonder why she has been titled ‘the greatest skier of all time’ – and all before turning 30!
Unfortunately, due to missing four races this season, it is unlikely that she will be able to clinch her ninth Crystal Globe slalom title at the World Cup Finals in Sun Valley at the end of March. Though she’s won three of her five World Cup slalom races this season, she is currently placed 6th ahead of the event, taking her out of contention for a first-place finish.
However, with the Milano Cortina Winter 2026 Olympics on the horizon, Shiffrin’s sights are now set on another Olympic Gold. Preparing for her fourth Olympic appearance next winter, she is poised for a thrilling return to the world’s biggest stage. After missing out on the podium in Beijing 2022, she will enter these Olympics as a top contender, ready and raring to reclaim her Olympic title.
