What happens at the end of the season in European ski resorts? The last of the major resorts in Europe have closed for the season, with the exception of a few glacial areas that remain open for summer skiing. Many ask what our instructors do during the summer months, and what ski-related or outdoors activities you can be doing over the summer. So what are your options?
Glacier Skiing
If you would like to continue to ski during the summer months there are some fantastic options of resorts that give you the opportunity to ski perfectly groomed runs surrounded by breathtaking glaciers. You will find many instructors on Maison Sport who continue to work in Europe over the summer in resorts such as Cervinia in Italy, Zermatt in Switzerland and Hintertux in Austria.
Skiing on a glacier offers a unique experience compared to that on regular ski slopes. You will notice differences in the landscape which is often characterised by jagged mountain peaks, crevasses and beautiful ice formations.
Southern Hemisphere Skiing
Some instructors follow the winter and will continue to carry out their work in resorts in the Southern Hemisphere. One of our instructors on Maison Sport, Emily Pocock, has a ski instructor training business called Alpine Academy based in Queenstown, New Zealand. If you are a confident skier and have ever considered becoming a Ski Instructor, this summer could be your perfect opportunity.
They have limited spaces this summer in their Level 1 & 2 Ski Instructor Courses running between 2nd July to 1st September 2023. These courses will give you the opportunity to improve your technical ability, explore New Zealand, gain a ski instructor qualification and obtain some work experience. All confident skiers are welcome including those who have recently left school, those on a gap year pre or post university, those wanting a career change or even recent retirees that fancy a new challenge.

Outdoor Adventures
Many of the larger ski resorts across Europe stay partially open during the summer offering activities such as mountain biking, hiking, watersports and golf. A few of the most popular resorts to visit in the summer include:
Zell am See, Austria. Zell am See offers a range of summer activities including hiking, mountain biking and golf. The lake in Zell am See also gives visitors the chance to enjoy watersports such as swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding.
St Moritz, Switzerland. This luxury ski resort offers lots of summer activities including hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. They also put on outdoor festivals and lots of events held throughout the summer
Livigno, Italy. Livigno has a great atmosphere during the summer where you can enjoy hiking, mountain biking, zip lining and rock climbing. Livigno is also known for its fantastic range of tax free shopping.
The 3 Valleys. During the summer The 3 Valleys offer activities such as hiking, mountain biking, paragliding, golf, white water rafting, adventure parks and scenic chairlift rides with beautiful mountain views.
Ski Specific Fitness
If you aren’t planning on visiting the mountains over the summer, there is plenty to be doing to ensure your body is well prepared for the season ahead. Maintaining a base level of fitness over the summer months will help tremendously in keeping you feeling strong, injury free and ready to tackle the mountains next season.
