Pricing Guide

9 August, 2022 17 min read

We all understand that there are more important weeks during the season or ‘peak weeks’ as we like to call them. Peak weeks generally take place over Christmas, the end of December into early January and most of February for the school holidays. During these weeks you should be looking to take advantage of full week bookings and increasing your hourly price to its maximum. We recommend that instructors in the major resorts of France and Switzerland should charge around 95 EUR or 100 CHF an hour during these weeks and also add a Booking Rule to ensure that you are booked for consecutive days. If you are a new instructor to Maison Sport we would recommend reducing your pricing a couple EUR/CHF in order to gain traction on the site and build up your profile reviews

When it comes to the “off-peak” season (January, March, April), it is much more beneficial to set your prices lower than what you typically charge during peak times. This allows you to compete with other local ski schools. Off-peak weeks are especially popular with customers who don’t have children or those that are looking for a cheaper ski holiday – by travelling in an off-peak week, their travel and accommodation will generally be considerably cheaper than a peak week, so it’s completely normal for ski lessons to also be cheaper.

By offering a slightly lower rate during off-peak periods you should be able to attract new customers and hopefully work more hours than you would if you keep your rates high. We went through our historic data for Val d’Isere from 2021/22 and the average hourly rate in the off-peak season was €71. Therefore, for the major resorts of France and Switzerland, we recommend that you should set your hourly price to about 75 EUR or 80 CHF during the ‘off peak’ weeks if you would like to attract good bookings.

The instructors that get the most out of Maison Sport offer super dynamic pricing, where they ensure they optimise their earnings during holiday weeks and then offer competitive rates in off-peak weeks depending on demand. Being flexible and dynamic with your pricing will attract customers to your profile all season long – we have seen many instructors already using these tactics successfully last season and they have earned in excess of €20,000.

We also know afternoon lessons are generally a bit harder to sell, especially during off-peak weeks. If you’re not getting as many bookings as you would like you can use our discount feature in your calendar, which will let you apply a specific discount to your afternoon time slots. You can easily apply this in your calendar by clicking on settings and in the pop-up box, enter the discounted price you would like to set and then click “Save Changes”.

Chamonix

Chamonix is a ski resort that is different from any other. Hosts of the inaugural Winter Olympic Games, this classical city in the mountains has numerous ski areas all with their own charm set within the backdrop of Mont Blanc. Favourites with beginners though to professionals tackling the freeride terrain, this bustling resort brings in huge numbers of tourists each winter giving you a prime opportunity to maximise your season earnings. During the peak weeks generally over Christmas, the end of December into early January and most of February we recommend you charge €90. During the off-peak season (January, March, April), it is much more beneficial to set your prices lower to stay competitive, so we recommend charging €80.

Megeve

The luxury resort of Megève boasts endless tree-lined pistes, creating an outstanding skiing experience with views of Mont Blanc. The mountain quietness is ideal for children and beginners as well, making this resort a perfect place to learn to ski. Instructors can command a higher price in Megeve and looking back at the past season, this is achievable. Throughout the season the pricing of instructors has hovered around €80 but we think during the peak season upwards of €90 can be charged, and remaining with €80 during the off peak times.

Tignes

Comprising some of the finest skiing on the planet, Tignes, which is one of the highest resorts in Europe, is assured of exceptional snow conditions year round during the winter and summer glacier months. Tignes caters to everybody, but the resort is a noteworthy hotspot for those seeking more challenging terrain. Along with sister resort Val D’Isere instructors in the 21/22 season did not charge anywhere near what could be and what customers would be willing to pay. We recommend charging €90 during the peak season and €80 during the off peak season to ensure you maximise your earning potential

Val Thorens

Val Thorens is one of the top 20 resorts worldwide scoring highly for altitude and acclaim, the resort welcomes everybody from pros to those just starting out. Val Thorens can be an expensive resort, but it prides itself on snow surety and infrastructure. The hourly rates charged last season were lower (below €80 all season) than what we would expect for a major French resort and instructors could have utilised dynamic pricing much better. We recommend you charge €90 during peak periods and €80 during the off peak period.

Courchevel

Courchevel, part of the well known Trois Vallees has become one of the major destinations for the crème de la crème in pursuit of great skiing and luxury alike. While Courchevel is packed with opulence and great food, it is a wonderful resort for visitors ranging from beginners to advanced in order to improve their skills. Courchevel being a premium resort we think you can charge higher prices due to the demand and luxury pull of the resort with the highest earning instructor charging in excess of €96. We recommend charging €90 during peak weeks and €80 during off peak weeks.

Meribel

Meribel with its vast ski area situated in Les Trois Vallees has many amenities and is an extremely popular holiday destination known for its scenic mountain appeal with stunning classical wood-clad buildings. Popular amongst British skiers, families, couples and large groups of friends all frequent this resort. The average peak and off peak rates in the 21/22 season were €85 and €79 respectively. We think it is possible to charge more based on what some of our top earning instructors charged. So we recommend a peak rate of €90 and an off peak rate of €80.

Morzine

Centred in the expansive Portes du Soleil area, Morzine provides a substantive experience to a diversity of different snow sports enthusiasts. Encompassing many miles of tranquil pistes, Morzine can be a fantastic place for those starting out and establishing confidence in a beautiful and easy going environment. Some instructors have been charging up to €94 per hour which shows it is possible to set this pricing and still attract bookings, thus a peak season hourly rate of €90 is recommended. Though we recommend dropping this to €80 during off peak times.

Avoriaz

Avoriaz is very conveniently located in the locale of the expansive Portes du Soleil area offering many kilometres of pistes for beginners and intermediates alike. Avoriaz, situated at 1800, boasts regular snow from December through April and frequently records the most snowfall throughout the season out of any French resort’s. We believe instructors here can charge higher than what they think, based on our data it was shown that the instructors charged in excess of €99 but the season average was €79. Based on this we recommend that instructors set their peak season pricing at €90 and off peak at €80.

La Plagne & Les Arcs

The resorts of La Plagne and Les Arcs situated in Paradiski are two separate areas, but can be reached in just five minutes thanks to the Vanoise Express. There are many kilometres of slopes for every level of skier and boarder and thanks to the high altitude there is always plenty of snow. In La Plagne based on historical data the average hourly rate for the whole season was €86.5 which is right about where we would expect. Therefore for the peak season we recommend charging €90 and €85 in the off peak season, going lower than this and you risk capitalising on good seasons of bookings. In Les Arcs the picture is slightly different where it is a bit cheaper. The average hourly rate for the whole season was €75.5 but we think that your pricing can be higher at €85 for peak and €80 for off peak, dropping down to €75 for afternoon sessions if you so wish.

Zermatt

Zermatt is one of the premier resorts in Switzerland. Glacier skiing taking place year round, a striking landscape, and a variety of terrain make Zermatt special. Zermatt caters well to intermediate and advanced skiers and boarders looking for a quality experience. From the ski lifts to the powder to the pistes, Zermatt has it all in abundance. Though it is not a cheap resort and thus higher pricing can be demanded by instructors. We recommend a price of CHF 95 to be set for peak season as this is in line with what instructors charged in 21/22 along with CHF 85 for the off peak period. It is sometimes beneficial to drop the afternoon rate slightly in order to attract a steady flow of bookings throughout the season.

Verbier

Situated at the centre of the 4 Valleys, Verbier has a chalet-style town with impressive views of the mountains. It has a range of altitudes and gets great snow perfect for beginners and intermediates but also more advanced skiers and those wanting off piste lessons. Being Switzerland and a major resort it is expensive which is why pricing is higher. From last season the peak rate was CHF 90 and off peak was CHF 84, these are mostly inline with what we would expect, the highest earning instructor was charging CHF 94! So we would recommend a peak rate of CHF 95 and off peak rate of CHF 85, this can be lowered in afternoon sessions for both.

Courmayeur

The ski resort of Courmayeur in Italy is set within the backdrop of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. Courmayeur attracts families and groups with mixed skiing abilities with pistes catering to all levels. The resort also brings in off-piste skiers looking at hiring guides. The prices instructors set during the 21/22 season were pretty much on par with what we would expect with the higher earners charging up to €75 so we would recommend for peak periods charging €80 and and €75 during the off peak times. The guidance for afternoon pricing drops slightly as this encourages a good supply of bookings catering to everyone.

Cervinia

Situated at the end of the Aosta Valley, this high-altitude resort ensures impressive snow cover from November to May but also provides easy connection to Zermatt with glacier skiing in the summer. The pistes are best for intermediate skiers. Prices are notably lower than over the border which influences what instructors should be charging per hour. The highest earners had rates at €75 which is what we would recommend during the peak season. We recommend lowering this to €65-€75 during off peak times in order to target more customers.

Cortina

Cortina is Italy’s luxury in the mountains boasting first-class piste skiing in breathtaking mountain scenery. The resort has slopes perfect for beginners through to intermediates and some off piste for those more adventurous. Cortina can be known for its expensive side and thus higher prices can be justified. Some instructors were charging over €70 during the 21/22 season but most could have been charging more, at least above €60. So we recommend that during the peak season you charge €75 and during the off peak, €65-€75.

Sauze D’Oulx

Sauze is one of the most popular resorts in Vialattea and it boasts more than 100 km out of 400km of the ski area to which it belongs. It is famous for its suggestive slopes between the trees repaired from the wind as well as its top sunny vallone which connect the resort with the rest of Vialattea such as Sansicario and the renowned Sestriere. The strong presence of pubs make it a perfect place for British tourists. The average price for the whole season was €48.5 which is surprisingly low compared to other Italian resorts. The highest earning instructor was able to charge €65, which shows it is possible. Therefore we recommend in the off peak period you charge between €55-€65 and above €65 in the peak season, dropping this slightly by offering discounts for afternoon lessons.

Corvara

Corvara is one part of the massive Dolomiti Superski area and provides access to excellent pistes. The resort is suited to beginners with a range of easy slopes and perfectly caters to intermediates; more demanding terrain can be found in the wider area. The instructor rates last season were well below what we would expect in a prime resort in Italy averaging out at €59 even though high earning instructors were charging up to €87. Therefore we recommend that you charge €80 and above during peak periods and €70-€80 during off peak periods. This can be dropped around €5 for afternoon classes.

Madonna di Campiglio is one of Italy’s top resorts, set in 150km of stunning pistes. Tree-lined slopes offer a haven for beginner and intermediate alike, but there are also some steeper slopes for those more advanced. The average season pricing was €48.5 which is considerably lower than what we would expect instructors to charge here. The instructor that earnt the most was charging €65 an hour which is over €15 more than the average. Based on this information we would recommend charging €65-€70 during the off peak season and €70-€75 during the peak season.
