Located in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Engelberg is a picturesque ski resort that sits at 1,050m with the highest ski lift reaching a lofty 3,020m. The resort offers direct access to the expansive Engelberg-Titlis ski area, boasting 82km of pisted terrain. 

Established in the 12th century, the charming resort offers a variety of accommodation, from traditional Swiss chalets to modern, luxury hotels. The snow-sure resort has a long ski season, which typically runs from mid-November through to May. 

Skiing in Engelberg

Engelberg is a paradise for skiers of all levels. The resort features three types of ski passes; a beginner’s ski pass which provides access to easy terrain via 6 lifts, an Engelberg-only ski pass, which covers 20 lifts and 82km of pistes, and finally, the Titlis ski pass, which offers access to the full Engelberg-Titlis ski area.

For beginners, Engelberg offers numerous gentle slopes such as the Gerschnialp and Untertrübsee, providing a safe and enjoyable environment to build confidence. Intermediates have a good variety of runs to choose from, with the Stand and Jochpass areas being particularly recommended for their blue and red pistes. 

Advanced skiers can challenge themselves on the demanding black runs in the Titlis area. The resort is also renowned for its freeride skiing, with extensive off-piste terrain that is easily accessible from the lifts. The Laub and Steinberg are among the most popular off-piste routes in Engelberg, offering steep, ungroomed terrain for experienced skiers. 

Is Engelberg Family-friendly?

Engelberg is an excellent ski resort for families, offering a safe, pedestrianised centre and a range of ski-in-ski-out accommodation. The resort features a variety of family-friendly amenities, including child-friendly restaurants, a swimming pool, ice skating rink and a fun sledge run. Engelberg also offers discounted lift passes for children under the age of 16.

Engelberg has a vibrant, lively centre with plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes to explore. The après ski scene in Engelberg is diverse and dynamic, with the Yucatan Bar and Chalet offering regular live music and the Spindle discotheque drawing in late-night revellers. 

For a truly unique après ski experience, head to the Igloo Bar at Trübsee, which offers stunning mountain views and cosy, igloo-style seating.

Engelberg is home to a variety of excellent dining options, both on and off the slopes. In the resort, the Alpenclub offers traditional Swiss cuisine in a cosy setting, while the Restaurant Schweizerhof impresses with its gourmet menu. For a mountain lunch with a view, the Restaurant Stand and the Berghaus Jochpass are highly recommended. 

How to Get to Engelberg

The quickest way to get to Engelberg from the UK is to fly to Zurich Airport, which is only a 1h30m transfer from Engelberg. The other nearby airports are Basel Airport (1h50m) and Geneva Airport (2h30m). If you prefer to travel by train, the Engelberg railway station is conveniently located in the centre of the resort and offers direct connections to Lucerne.
