Alternative winter activities to skiing…

Riding the gondola – If you want to take in the epic mountain views, but don’t fancy the ski down, then riding a gondola is a great option. Culminating at 2,738 metres, the Saulire gondola takes you to the highest point in the Courchevel Valley ski area. With a fantastic restaurant awaiting you at the top, it’s one of our favourite gondolas for non-skiers. Other top gondolas include Tignes’ Grande Motte cable car, which boasts a viewing terrace on its roof, which is big enough to accommodate 20 passengers.

Fatbiking – Fatbiking is the latest form of winter backcountry travel. Once you’ve hired your bike (available from many ski rental shops), you are free to go explore endless winter trails! If you’re new to a resort or concerned about getting lost, we recommend checking out some fat biking excursions.

Luging/tobogganing – 2 kilometres through a forest, 3 kilometres of Grand Prix-style racing, or just a few metres with little ones, in Courchevel, the choice is yours! Luging or tobogganing is where you ride a small-one person or two-person sledge down the slopes. Either give it a go during the day or try it at night under multicoloured lights for an extra thrill.

Snowshoeing – A form of hiking, snowshoeing offers individuals the chance to go off the beaten track and hike on fresh powder, without the worry of getting your foot stuck in the snow! Snowshoeing is a great exercise which is very well priced in comparison to skiing or snowboarding. Your required gear includes snowshoes and appropriate attire; poles are also recommended, but not required. Top tip: Chamonix isn’t just home to some of Europes top ski spots, but also home to a number of excellent snowshoeing routes. Chamonix’s bus and train service offers easy, free access to snowshoe routes throughout the valley.

Ice diving – Rediscover the wild and feel at one with nature with an ice diving experience! Starting from €95, ice diving in Tignes allows you to plunge into icy waters beneath frozen lakes. All equipment and training provided too!
