27 June, 2024 3 min read

Montgenèvre is a charming resort with a friendly atmosphere and excellent skiing. Sat at 1,860m, this high-altitude resort forms part of the expansive Milky Way ski area, offering 400km of skiable terrain, and is renowned for having typically consistent snowfall throughout the winter season. With its own glacier – the Gondrans glacier, year-round skiing is possible, reaching up to 2,700m with breath-taking views across the Durance Valley.

With a large and efficient lift system and links to neighbouring Italian resorts, there is a wealth of terrain to explore. Montgenèvre is suitable for all levels of skiers, offering an exciting range of runs and off-piste skiing, as well as ample beginner-friendly areas.

Montgenèvre Ski Area

The Montgenèvre ski area comprises four main areas; Chalmettes, Gondrans, Serre Thibaud and Prarial, all of which can be accessed directly from the resort centre. The ski area in Montgenèvre consists of 110 runs, of which 23% are green, 34% are blue, 30% are red and 13% are black.

Beginner Skiing in Montgenèvre

Montgenèvre is an ideal resort for beginners, with a wide range of gentle nursery slopes and wide, forgiving runs. The great snow conditions create an ideal environment for learners, and there are two main nursery slopes in the resort centre. Once beginners progress from the nursery slopes, there are dedicated beginner areas to explore, such as Les Gondrans and Les Anges.

Intermediate Skiing in Montgenèvre

Montgenèvre is an excellent resort for intermediate skiers looking to challenge themselves and improve their skills. With a large range of blue and red runs, intermediates will have a variety of options. The Gondrans area, with its sweeping blues, is perfect for less experienced intermediates, while more skilled intermediates might head to the Serre Thibaud area, skiing down to Claviere. One of our favourite runs in this area is the Rocher de l’Aigle; a thrilling red run that offers panoramic views of the valley. Bear in mind, the grading system in Montgenèvre tends to be more challenging than in other French resorts.

Advanced Skiing in Montgenèvre

Montgenèvre offers lots of options for advanced skiers. With over 13% of the runs in the resort being black, there is an array of challenging terrain to conquer. The most famous run in Montgenèvre is the Gondrans, a thrilling black run that delivers a pulse-quickening experience. For an even more challenging run, aim for the Tremplin, a steep mogul run that will test your skills to the limit.

Off-piste Skiing in Montgenèvre

Montgenèvre is a haven for advanced skiers, boasting some of the best lift-served off-piste skiing in Europe. From steep chutes to snowy bowls, there is much off-piste terrain to discover. One of the most popular off-piste areas for experienced skiers is the Vallée de la Clarée, accessed from the top of the Rocher de l’Aigle. We recommend hiring a local guide or instructor when skiing off-piste.
