All the Benefits of a Ski Holiday

Customer 20 January, 2022 6 min read

When booking a holiday, most of us want to disconnect from the everyday hustle and bustle and therefore usually look for places where we can rest, do different activities than those we do on a daily basis, and enjoy a breathtaking view. Thousands of people each year chose to go to the mountains for their winter holidays and whether you knew it or not, spending some time out there comes with great benefits, some of which you might not even be aware of. Other than a great time with friends, family, or alone time, here are some of the benefits you get from your holiday on the slopes.

Fresh Air

Most of us spend all year living in busy cities full of pollution and without many green spaces around, unless you are lucky enough to live near a park. Next time be more aware of the fact that once you get to the mountains you can really feel the difference in the air you breathe. It’s obvious that the lack of pollution is better for our general health, but did you know that it can actually help with respiratory problems? Many common respiratory issues can be mostly caused by pollution, pollen, dust and other common particles found in city air. In the mountains the clean crisp fresh air will be a good reset for your lungs and your body, hopefully giving you a break from the allergies and constant stuffy feeling. Even a day of fresh mountain air will have your body feeling brand new.

De-Stressing Environment

Any holiday is hopefully a moment for us to disconnect from our everyday life and work, regardless of where we are, but being on the mountains is a little more special. It is scientifically proven that spending time in nature can help relieve stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and boost your wellbeing. Activities such as walks or cross-country skiing are great  because they allow you to enjoy the mountains at a slower pace and take you deep into nature where you can enjoy the peace and quiet and recharge your body and mind.

Better Sleep

Did you know that lower temperatures help you sleep better? When you’re in the mountains many factors, including the low temperatures, will help you get a better sleep and therefore improve your overall health. First of all, the fact that you’ll probably be out all day either skiing, snowboarding, or participating in other activities, will make you so tired that you’ll fall asleep in no time and sleep through the night. Second, one of the great things about the mountain is that there is no noise pollution. We know too well that living in a city means we’ll hear sirens, chitchats, cars, construction work, and general city noises at all hours of the night and bright and early in the morning, even though we get used to it, it definitely bothers our much needed rest. Finally, the cold temperature is great for a good night’s sleep. Even though you will of course have heating in your room, it’s always good to know that sleeping in a “cold” room will help you fall asleep easier, fight insomnia, promote uninterrupted sleep and improve your melatonin production. So next time you’re on the mountains consider cracking a window or lowering the heat setting.

Staying Active

When you decide to go to the mountains for your holidays it’s different from any other holiday destination. If you go to the beach, you’re probably going to spend your time laying under the sun, if you go to a city, you’ll spend your time on different tours and at restaurants trying out local cuisine, but when you decide to go to the mountains you know you’re going to have a pretty active holiday. Going to the mountains means you’ll have ski, snowboard, ski touring, cross-country skiing, or off-piste lessons during the day, and will remain pretty active even when you’re not on the slopes. This is great! Physical activity, especially when done outside in nature is an enormous serotonin boost and it will have you feeling on cloud nine all day long, plus it will get you extra tired for a wonderful night’s sleep. Book a lesson with one of the independent instructors on Maison Sport to make sure your day is packed with an amazing time on the slopes.

Clearly spending time in the mountains is the best decision we could make. Especially after the last year of lockdown and high levels of stress, we all need some time in big open spaces, breathing in fresh air, and practicing sports outside of our living rooms! If you haven’t done so already, book your holiday in one of the many ski resorts around Europe and enjoy all the benefits the mountain has to offer.
