Mikaela Shiffrin is one of the most celebrated athletes in the world of ski racing, having won numerous Olympic medals, World Championship and World Cup titles, and has become a household name in the ski community. She has her sights set on an ambitious goal: to break the all-time World Cup victory record.

The current record for the most World Cup victories in a career is held by Ingemar Stenmark, a Swedish ski racer who won an incredible 86 races during his career in the 1970s and 1980s. Shiffrin currently has 85 victories to her name, which puts her in second place on the all-time list. This weekend Shiffrin has a chance to equal Ingemar Stenmark’s 86 victories, in Åre, Sweden, where they will be hosting Giant Slalom and Slalom World Cup events.

Shiffrin’s quest for the record has been years in the making. She came onto the World Cup scene in 2012, when she was just 17 years old, and quickly established herself as one of the best skiers in the world. She won her first World Cup race in 2013, and has been securing victories ever since. She has won races in every discipline of alpine skiing, from slalom to giant slalom to downhill, and has proven herself to be one of the greatest ski racers of all time.

Last weekend she secured her fifth overall World Cup title, with seven races left in the season, but fell short of the record-tying 86th career win.
