How to take the perfect action shot on the slopes…

Tips from independent ski instructor and Maison Sport videographer Ugo…

1. First of all, clean your lens! – this may seem obvious, but when your hands are cold and you spot a great photo opportunity, it can be easy to forget to clean your lens! A blurry lens ultimately results in a blurry image, so be sure to remember this little tip!

2. Lock the focus and make the exposure right by tapping and holding the screen – When you have launched the camera app, tap the screen to choose the part of the image you want to focus on and expose. Tap and hold on your focal point until you see an AE/AF Lock banner appear at the top of the screen, this will ensure you have lock exposure and focus (for iPhones).

3. Create a good composition by framing the subject following the rule of thirds – The rule of thirds is a ‘rule’ that suggests dividing the image into thirds and placing the subject on one of the two sides, instead of the centre. This rule works particularly well when capturing skiers, this is because when you move the subject away from the centre of the photograph, the viewer’s eye will travel naturally through the photograph towards the action.

4. Aim for low angle shots to make the subject look like a hero – a low-angle shot is a shot from a camera angle positioned anywhere below the eye line, looking up. By snapping a skier or snowboarder in this way, brings a greater sense of speed, as well as showing off the blue sky behind them.

5. Find a cool background to make the image pop – There’s nothing worse than a great shot of a skier or snowboarder, with loads of other people also in the frame! By spending a few moments to find a good background, such as a mountain range, can make an image look amazing!

6. Make the shot stable by holding the phone closer to your body – By holding your phone close to you, makes your arms far more stable, enabling you to capture a sharper image.
