What to expect from ski holidays this winter season

Travelling abroad at the moment might seem a bit uncertain, however, we are all hoping that the situation will improve in time for the winter, so we can get back on our skis and boards!

With social distancing measures already in place in some resorts, enhanced cleaning in hotels and strict cleaning guidelines from companies such as Airbnb, as well as the option of driving to The Alps as opposed to flying, we believe that this season will still be a great one - albeit with plenty of hand sanitiser!


What measures will be taken this year to help secure the safety of skiers and snowboarders:

  • Wearing a mask will be compulsory in the waiting areas, at boarding stations and while on the ski lifts.
  • All contact areas will be disinfected frequently.
  • Masks will be compulsory whilst you’re renting your ski kit, all kit used will be disinfected between users. 
  • Restaurants and bars will only offer table service and tables should be at least 1 metre apart.
  • Masks should always be worn when travelling around a restaurant or bar.
  • When dropping and collecting children from ski school – parents will be required to always wear masks.
  • Children aged 11 and over must also wear a mask in lift queues and on lifts.
  • Masks will also be compulsory on resort transport, such as on the ski shuttles, main bus service and on the petit train.

 

Social distancing measures

We can already see social distancing measures being implemented across the Alps (many of the resorts with glaciers, such as Tignes have been open for weeks now).
These include social distancing in lift queues and limits on the number of people in gondolas or riding on chairlifts.

Skiers and snowboarders are being asked to wear a face covering and gloves, however, with many skiers wearing gloves and Buffs this doesn’t feel like much of a change from the norm!

For public transport, many resorts such as Courmayeur will be encouraging guests to pre-book private airport transfers, to reduce the number of people on large coach transfers and public transport. 

Changes in accommodation

Hotels are already adopting new safety measures to encourage cleanliness and social distancing. Booking into your own chalet or apartment is a great way to control your surroundings off the slopes - Airbnb has put measures in place to help their hosts ensure they’re making their homes as safe as possible for guests.

They have broken down the cleaning process into five steps: prepare, clean, sanitize, check, and reset - hosts that commit to this process will have a special highlight on their listing’s page.

Get to the Alps without leaving the ground

The future of flying remains unresolved and is a key factor in the uncertainty of the upcoming winter's travel plans, however, many airlines are adopting new measures all the time, to ensure the safety of their passengers.

Resorts off the beaten track

If you’re looking to escape the big crowds, try opting for smaller, quieter resorts,  such as Les Carroz, Les Saisies, Montgenevre or Champagny. Many of these lesser-known resorts also offer great-value ski holidays.

Changes to how lessons will be taken place

Maison Sport offers private ski and snowboard lessons, this means you won't be surrounded by loads of people outside of your own social/family bubble, in comparison to big group lessons where you come into contact with more random people.
