Located in the heart of the Zillertal Valley, Mayrhofen is a charming and vibrant ski resort, sitting at 630m with the highest ski lift reaching an impressive 2,500m. The resort is a gateway to the extensive Zillertal 3000 ski area, offering 136km of diverse, skiable terrain. 

Mayrhofen is a traditional Tyrolean village with a modern twist. The resort boasts an array of accommodation options, from luxurious hotels to cosy chalets and modern apartments. With its high-altitude location, the ski season in Mayrhofen typically runs from early December to mid-April. 

Skiing in Mayrhofen

With 136km of pisted terrain, skiing in Mayrhofen caters to all abilities. The resort offers two lift pass options; a Mayrhofen-only ski pass, granting access to the 57 lifts in Mayrhofen and the Zillertal Super Ski Pass, which covers an astounding 515km of pisted terrain across the whole Zillertal Valley.

Beginners can enjoy several gentle slopes in Mayrhofen, including the Ahorn plateau, renowned as one of the best beginner areas in the Alps. For intermediate skiers, the Penkenbahn gondola provides access to a wide range of blue and red runs, including the 5.5km long red ‘home run’ back to the village.  

Advanced skiers can challenge themselves on the Harakiri piste, the steepest groomed slope in Austria with a gradient of 78%. For the adventurous, there’s also extensive off-piste terrain and several snow parks, including the Vans Penken Park, one of the top freestyle parks in Europe.

Mayrhofen is a fantastic ski resort for families, offering a host of family-friendly facilities and activities. The pedestrianised town centre is safe and easy to navigate and many accommodation options are within walking distance of the ski lifts. For the little ones, there are dedicated children’s areas and slopes as well as a variety of non-skiing activities like ice-skating, sledging and indoor climbing. 

Après-Ski Scene in Mayrhofen

The après-ski scene in Mayrhofen is as varied as its slopes. From cosy mountain huts to lively bars and clubs, there’s something for everyone. The Ice Bar at the foot of the Penkenbahn gondola is a popular spot for a post-ski drink, while the Scotland Yard Pub offers live music and a cosy atmosphere.

For late-night entertainment, Brück’n Stadl and Mo’s Café offer a vibrant party scene, while the Speakeasy Arena hosts live DJ sets and themed party nights.

Dining in Mayrhofen

Mayrhofen offers a fantastic selection of dining options, from traditional Tyrolean cuisine to international dishes. For a gourmet experience, try the Grillhof Alm, renowned for its regional dishes and panoramic views. The Wirtshaus zum Griena offers traditional Austrian fare in a 450-year-old building, while the Neue Post Hotel serves a range of international cuisine.

How to Get to Mayrhofen

The most convenient way to reach Mayrhofen from the UK is by air, with the closest airports being Innsbruck (approximately 1 hour away), Munich (2 hours away), and Salzburg (2.5 hours away). Regular transfer services are available from these airports. Alternatively, Jenbach is the nearest train station, around 35-minutes away, with regular bus and taxi services to the resort.

  • The White Lounge at the top of the Ahorn cable car is a must-visit spot. This igloo village includes an ice bar, sun deck and even igloo hotel rooms for an overnight stay.
  • Explore the Zillertal Nature Park for a break from skiing. The park offers beautiful winter hikes and snowshoe tours. 
  • For a unique dining experience, book a fondue evening at the Ahornhütte, where you can enjoy a traditional cheese fondue before descending the mountain on a torch-lit walk.
