Obertauern Resort Overview

Located high in the heart of the Radstädter Tauern in the Austrian Alps, Obertauern is a unique and charming ski resort that sits at 1,740m, with the highest ski lift reaching 2,526m. This snow-sure resort, surrounded by impressive mountains, offers 100km of diverse, skiable terrain that is perfect for winter sports enthusiasts of all abilities. 

Developed in the 1950s, Obertauern is known for its chalet-style, ski-in-ski-out accommodation, ranging from luxury hotels to cosy apartments. The village is car-free, making it an idyllic retreat for a peaceful winter holiday. The ski season typically runs from late November to early May, ensuring a long season with excellent skiing conditions. 

Skiing in Obertauern

Obertauern offers an array of skiing options for all levels, from beginners to advanced skiers. With the ‘Tauern Runde’, a unique network of lifts and slopes that encircle the village, you can ski an entire 26km circuit in either direction – clockwise or anti-clockwise. 

The resort offers 100km of pisted terrain, serviced by 26 lifts. For beginners, there are plenty of wide, gentle slopes to build confidence on, including the Gamsleiten 2 run. Intermediate skiers can enjoy a variety of red runs, such as the Zehnerkar and Hundskogel slopes, whilst advanced skiers can test their skills on challenging black runs like the steep Gamsleiten 1.

Freestylers are not left out in Obertauern, with the resort offering two snow parks; the Longplay Park for experienced riders and the Snowpark for beginners and intermediate riders. Both parks feature a diverse array of obstacles, kickers and boxes to test your skills on.

Is Obertauern Family-friendly?

Obertauern is a fantastic ski resort for families, with a relaxed atmosphere and a range of family-friendly facilities. The car-free resort is safe for children, and many of the accommodation options offer ski-in-ski-out convenience, making it easy for families to hit the slopes. In addition to skiing, there are numerous other activities available, such as tobogganing, winter hiking and ice skating.

Obertauern offers a vibrant après-ski scene with over 25 bars and pubs to enjoy. Whether you’re after a quiet drink or a lively night out, you’ll find something to suit your mood. The Lürzer Alm is a popular choice, known for its live music and dancing, while the Edelweissalm offers stunning panoramic views of the mountains.

Obertauern has a range of dining options, from mountain huts serving hearty Austrian fare to gourmet restaurants offering international cuisine. For a traditional experience, try the Waldhauslalm, known for its regional dishes and cosy atmosphere. For something more refined, the Restaurant Hotel Schneider offers an exquisite menu with a focus on local, organic ingredients.

How to Get to Obertauern 

The quickest way to get to Obertauern from the UK is by air, with the three closest airports being Salzburg (90km away), Klagenfurt (140km away) and Munich (260km away). From these airports, Obertauern can be reached by either train or car.
