Plan Your Morning: Give Yourself Extra Time Before Your First Ski Lesson

Your first day of skiing can feel overwhelming, so start early to avoid stress. Remember to:

  • Set an alarm and wake up with plenty of time to get ready in the morning.
  • Eat a hearty breakfast for sustained energy. Your first ski lesson can be exhausting!
  • Give yourself enough time to get your boots on and collect your skis from the ski locker.
  • Aim to arrive at the meeting point early so you have plenty of time for introductions before your first ski lesson. Remember that walking in ski boots takes a little longer!

Learn the Basics Before You Hit the Slopes for the First Time

how to carry skis

Before your first ski lesson, it helps to understand a few fundamental skills, including:

  • How to carry your skis – Place your skis together so the flat sides are touching and rest them on your shoulder, holding onto the toe piece or front of the ski (as pictured above).
  • How to put on and take off skis (do this on flat ground first) – Insert the toe of your boot into the binding first, then press your heel down firmly until it clicks. To take the skis off, press down firmly on the release lever at the back of the binding with your pole or other ski to unclip your boots.

Your instructor will guide you through all of the fundamentals, but having a basic understanding in advance of your lesson can boost your confidence ahead of your first time skiing. Make Sure You Have the Correct Skiing Equipment

ski equipment

As a first-time skier, it is easy to forget some of the necessary equipment you’ll need for your ski lessons. This typically includes skis, poles, boots and a helmet. If you are renting your ski gear, we recommend collecting it the night before your first ski lesson to avoid any delays on the morning of your lesson. It’s also a good idea to head down to the local lift pass office and collect your lift pass ahead of your first ski lesson – you won’t be able to access lifts without it!

Find a full list of all the ski equipment needed for your first time skiing and check our ski trip packing list to make sure you are completely prepared for your first ski trip. When you book your ski lessons on Maison Sport, you can add ski hire from our trusted partner, SkiSet. The staff at your chosen SkiSet shop will ensure your gear is correctly fitted and will make any necessary changes if something isn’t right after your first ski lesson.

Stretch and Warm-Up Before Skiing

Before hitting the slopes for the first time, it is important to warm up your muscles and stretch properly to prevent injuries. Focus on the main muscle groups you will be using when skiing, including your legs, hips, back and core muscles. This will prepare your body for the physical demands of your ski lessons and help you avoid muscle soreness when learning. Watch our recommended ski warm-up routine on YouTube!

Dress Appropriately for the Weather

Check the weather forecast before you head out for the day and dress accordingly. Layering is key to maintaining comfort while skiing. Wear moisture-wicking base layers and don’t forget to wear proper ski socks. Avoid cotton clothing as this won’t keep you warm! Beginner skiers tend to feel the cold more, so take this into consideration! It’s better to be too hot than too cold, as you can always unzip your jacket or remove layers.

Embrace a Positive Mindset

Approach your first time skiing with an open mind and a positive attitude. Learning to ski can be challenging, but it’s also an incredibly fun and rewarding experience. Be prepared to make mistakes and embrace them as learning opportunities. During your lessons, trust in your instructor’s guidance and believe in yourself – you’ll get there with a bit of practice and perseverance!

Being well-prepared for your first time skiing is key to a successful and enjoyable experience on the slopes. By waking up early, dressing appropriately, properly warming up and having a positive attitude, you’ll set the stage for a great skiing experience. With these top tips for first-time skiers in mind, you’ll be sure to make the most of your time on the slopes!
