The discipline dates back to the 19th century and was introduced by a man named Sondre Norheim who was from the Telemark region of Norway (hence the name). 
In telemark skiing, during the turn, the skier lunges and lifts their back heel, which is not attached to the ski like in traditional alpine skiing. The lunging movement should be fluid and rhythmical. The skier&#8217;s weight is mostly on the outside ski, however, it is more evenly distributed between both skis than in alpine skiing. Long, flat sections can be difficult as a beginner snowboarder so try to avoid these if you can before you have built your confidence at higher speeds. When strapping your boots into your snowboard, first strap in your front foot. Make sure to remove any snow in the footbed then put your foot in the binding, pushing it right back against the backboard. Begin by fastening the ankle strap then secure the toe strap, making sure they are nice and tight as this will give you more control. Many beginners sit down to strap in, but this can waste a lot of time and energy and give you a wet bum! The best way to strap in is to remain standing. Use the edge of your board to create a flat shelf so that your board doesn&#8217;t slide away, then bend down to strap in and you are ready to go! 
<h2>6. Learn How to Skate With Your Snowboard</h2>
With both feet strapped to one board, it can be difficult to move around easily on flat terrain. You don&#8217;t want to carry your board everywhere, as this wastes time and will make your arms ache. Instead, you can strap your front foot in and then push yourself forward with the other foot, or ‘skate’. This may feel a bit unnatural at first but it will make your life a lot easier! Skating is a key skill to learn as it will help you to get around on flat areas and use chairlifts. Whether you skate on your heel edge with your foot behind you, or on your toe edge with your foot in front will depend on your personal preference and the terrain. 
<h2>7. Learn How to Control Your Speed/Stop </h2>
One of the most important skills to learn as a beginner snowboarder is how to control your speed. Controlling your speed on a snowboard is all about using your edges &#8211; think of them as breaks. Depending on whether you are facing uphill (toe-side edge) or downhill (heel-side edge), you can use your edges to control your speed, applying more pressure through your toes or heels to slow down and stop. Great drills to practise using your edges and controlling your speed down the hill are side slipping and the falling leaf drill. Once you’ve perfected these drills you can progress onto turns!

When learning to snowboard, there are going to be many falls, but don&#8217;t let this put you off! To avoid injury, it’s important to learn to fall in as safe a way as possible to protect your joints that may take the brunt of the impact. To fall in a safe way, tuck your head in to protect your neck, bend your knees to stay low and minimise impact and try to fall on your forearms to protect your wrists. If you do fall, try to get up and moving again as quickly as possible or move to the side of the slope if you need to rest before getting up again to avoid being in the way of other skiers and snowboarders.

<h2>What is Cross-Country Skiing?</h2>
Cross-country skiing doesn’t involve going up the mountain using ski lifts and skiing back down but is practised on assigned tracks around ski resorts that are typically flat and wind across mountain meadows and forests. 
There are two cross-country skiing styles; classic and skate skiing. Classic cross-country skiing is practised in a prepared area where parallel tracks have been indented in the snow. Skiers place their skis in the tracks and push one ski in front of the other in a long stride walking motion, following the pre-established path. 
Skate (Free) skiing, as the name suggests resembles a skating movement. The skis are pushed diagonally outwards to gain momentum, and the more speed you want to gain, the harder you’ll have to push.

<h3>1. Classic Cross-Country Skis</h3>
These skis are long and thin and have a grip zone in the middle to prevent you from sliding backwards. The tip and back of the ski are referred to as glide zones and allow you to easily slide forward when you lift your foot.

Avoriaz is a playground for <a href="https://maisonsport.com/en/blog/top-5-ski-resorts-for-intermediate-skiers-in-france">intermediate skiers</a>, with countless runs to explore across the Portes du Soleil ski area. We recommend cruising down the eight blues accessible from the Lindarets Bowl and skiing over the Swiss border into <a href="https://maisonsport.com/en/resort/champery">Champéry</a> or Les Crosets. 
Avoriaz also boasts some incredible high-altitude skiing and <a href="https://maisonsport.com/en/blog/top-7-toughest-slopes-in-europe">challenging terrain</a> for more advanced skiers. We recommend heading to the Hauts Forts area of Avoriaz for steep, long black runs and mogul skiing. Or for even more of a challenge, try your might on the infamous Swiss Wall. Avoriaz has a great reputation for freestyle skiing and snowboarding. The resort hosts several freestyle events each year, including the freeride world tour stage qualifiers. It is also home to the famous Burton-designed Stash snowpark. The Stash is a natural terrain park that offers a playful environment for mixed-ability skiers and snowboarders to test their freestyle skills. Adrenaline junkies are spoilt for choice with six freestyle areas to choose from in Avoriaz and there’s even a Lil’ Stash for kids!

The car-free resort has a safe, pedestrianised centre and there is a range of ski-in-ski-out accommodation to choose from, with many self-catered options available. Avoriaz has a compact, lively centre with plenty of shops, bars, restaurants and cafes to enjoy. The <a href="https://maisonsport.com/en/blog/5-best-ski-resorts-for-apres-ski-in-europe">après ski</a> scene in Avoriaz rivals some of the bigger <a href="https://maisonsport.com/en/blog/5-best-ski-resorts-for-apres-ski-in-france">French après ski</a> hot spots such as <a href="https://maisonsport.com/en/resort/val-thorens">Val Thorens</a> and <a href="https://maisonsport.com/en/resort/val-disere">Val d’Isère</a>. With 40 bars to choose from and an energetic atmosphere, there’s plenty to keep you entertained throughout the evening and into the early hours. 
Perhaps the most iconic après ski venue in Avoriaz is the wildly popular Folie Douce, located just off the main return piste to the resort. Expect live music, eye-catching performers and lots of table dancing! Conveniently close to the resort centre, the venue is easily accessible on foot or on skis, so you won’t have to worry about a hairy run back! 
When the Folie Douce closes there are plenty of other popular après ski spots in Avoriaz to keep you entertained. The Place is the place to be for live music, while Le Shooters is famous for its shots and fun atmosphere. Globetrotter Cafe is a versatile spot that transforms from a breakfast venue into a lively late-night bar. Le Yak, located in the heart of the resort, is the only club in Avoriaz that stays open past 2am, so is a mecca for late-night revellers. 
Avoriaz is also home to a range of excellent eateries, both on and off the slopes. In the resort, Les Fontaines Blanches offers a delectable gourmet menu, La Reserve serves Savoyard specialities in a cosy setting and Les Trappeurs boasts a large, sunny, piste-side terrace. If you fancy lunch with a view there are many mountain restaurants that can be reached both on skis and on foot, including Mamo’s Cafe on the Lindarets plateau and Le Refuge des Brochaux Restaurant at the bottom of the Mossettes chairlift.

<h2>How to Get To Avoriaz </h2>
The quickest way to get to Avoriaz from the UK is to fly to Geneva Airport which is a 1h40m transfer from Avoriaz. Other nearby airports include Chambery Airport (2h30m), Grenoble Airport (3h) and Lyon St-Exupéry Airport (3h10m). If you are travelling by train, Cluses is the nearest station (1h10m transfer). If you choose to drive to Avoriaz, there is underground parking available on the outskirts of the resort.
