<h2>2. Confidence</h2>
Compared to fresh snow, when skiing on ice you will pick up a bit more speed and you are likely to hear your edges scraping across the ice (which isn&#8217;t a pleasant sound). But don&#8217;t let this throw you off. When the fear sets in, it is common for your technique and confidence to go out of the window, which can result in injury. It’s important to adjust your expectations when skiing on ice so that you remain calm and in control. On ice, you still need to be making the same movements as you would on softer snow. Ski with confidence on every turn &#8211; if you hesitate or back off the ice, you will only make it harder for yourself! 
<h2>3. Body Position </h2>
It’s important to maintain a good general skiing stance when skiing on ice. Keep your hands in front of you and your shoulders forward, facing down the hill, so that you are in a strong, balanced position. When skiing on ice, you should keep your feet slightly more stacked underneath you than when skiing on normal snow. If you try to make big edge angles on your turns, your outside ski may slip away from you on the ice, causing you to lose balance. Be sure to maintain pressure on the outside ski when turning to help you achieve more grip and control and try to maintain an even stance width.

If you are still struggling to turn on the ice, you can tactically plan your turns to avoid icy patches where possible. Look ahead and try to turn on areas of soft snow. Your edges will grip much better and it will feel a lot easier than tackling hard-packed ice. Another way to enhance your control is to traverse across the width of the slope. This will help you to manage your speed. When you turn across the hill you will be slowing yourself down rather than accelerating. If you do encounter an icy patch, stay calm and try to slide over it with flat skis.

The discipline dates back to the 19th century and was introduced by a man named Sondre Norheim who was from the Telemark region of Norway (hence the name). 
In telemark skiing, during the turn, the skier lunges and lifts their back heel, which is not attached to the ski like in traditional alpine skiing. The lunging movement should be fluid and rhythmical. The skier&#8217;s weight is mostly on the outside ski, however, it is more evenly distributed between both skis than in alpine skiing. The picturesque, lake-side resort set at 1,850m offers a multitude of snow-sure slopes reaching up to 3,300m. The three ski areas in the St. Moritz Valley boast 300km of pisted terrain to discover. The north-facing Corvatsch area tends to have the best snow conditions, especially later in the season. Andermatt is an excellent resort for snow-sure skiing. Sitting at 1,440m, the resort has a unique microclimate, which means it receives snowstorms from many directions. Hence, it has one of the highest snow records in the Alps. Connected to the neighbouring resort of Sedrun in 2019, Andermatt offers 180km of pisted terrain to explore. The Gemsstock ski area has plenty of high-altitude, north-facing runs which get some of the best snow cover in the Swiss Alps. Passo Tonale in the Italian Alps has a high altitude of 1,885m-3,100m, making it one of Italy’s most snow-sure ski resorts. With 100km of pistes and access to the Presena Glacier at 3,000m, Passo Tonale offers excellent skiing throughout the season which typically extends from late October to mid-April. The high-altitude, north-facing slopes of Presena offer incredibly reliable snow cover, as do the nursery slopes, so it is a great resort to visit for snow-sure skiing no matter your ability level.

Sestrière is the most snow-sure of all the ski resorts in the Vialattea (Milky Way) ski area, which is one of the <a href="https://maisonsport.com/en/blog/the-biggest-ski-areas-in-europe">biggest ski areas in Europe</a>! With 400km of pistes to explore, there are plenty of slopes to suit all abilities and more than enough snow to go around! From nursery slopes to an Olympic downhill run, there is something for everyone! Despite the area not having the highest amount of snowfall compared to other snow-sure resorts, the resort sits at 2,035m with its highest slopes reaching up to 2,825m, so the snow it does get holds very well. In addition to this, Sestrière has excellent snow-making facilities to keep the slopes in tip-top condition.

Most of the slopes are north-easterly facing, which means the snow stays firmer for longer thanks to a lack of direct sunlight. La Thuile is linked to the neighbouring ski resort of <a href="https://maisonsport.com/en/resort/la-rosiere-1850">La Rosière</a> in France forming the Espace San Bernardo ski domain, which offers 152km of pisted terrain to enjoy.
