5 things you should know before booking a ski trip with your children…

1. The resort matters – Choosing the right ski resort for your family ski holiday is really important. Each resort is family-friendly, however, some resorts cater better to families, whereas others are more suited to aprés ski and nightlife!

Courchevel – Courchevel boasts over 180 green-blue runs for beginners, making it one of Europes most child-friendly resorts. Courchevel doesn’t just offer great skiing and snowboarding but also has attractions for the whole family to enjoy:

  • The Tobogganing goes from Courchevel 1850 to Courchevel 1550. The run is free if you have a lift pass and is great fun for both children and adults. There is second toboggan run in Courchevel 1650, although you have to pay each time you use this one.
  • Aquamotion 1650 is an indoor and outdoor waterpark including heated pools, slides, spa, fitness centre, climbing wall and indoor surf.

Saas Fee – Our favourite family-friendly resort in the Swiss Alps is Saas Fee. There are plenty of practice lifts and easy slopes around the village which is perfect for beginner skiers. Saas Fee also has plenty of family-friendly attractions too including the world’s largest ice grotto, the Feeblitz, which is the steepest roller-coaster in the Alps and a 6km toboggan run on the Hannig!

Alpe d’Huez – With beginners runs in the village, an ice rink, swimming pool and a children-specific sports centre, Alpe d’Huez is a perfect slightly quieter choice for your next ski holiday. It has also been awarded the Famille Plus status by the French Ministry of Tourism.

2. Going away with another family – Starting a new sport in an unfamiliar mountainous environment can feel very overwhelming for a child. That’s why having a buddy, sibling or cousin with them might make their experience feel a little easier. The other benefit of going on a ski holiday with another family is the sharing of costs, these include:

  • Sharing a private transfer from the airport to your accommodation

  • If you have members of your party who are a similar skiing ability, you can hire a private ski instructor as opposed to being in a large group in a ski school.

  • Sharing the cost of a big catered chalet, which quite often will be cheaper than a hotel room (plus it’s more fun having everyone together!).

3. Find fun activities to do – When booking your ski holiday, make sure you are aware of all the fun activities your chosen resort has to offer, in order to make sure your children are entertained both on and off the slopes! Tobogganing, swimming, ice skating, snow biking and climbing are just a few of the fun activities that many resorts offer.

MS top tip: Make sure to check out your chosen resort’s webpage to see what fun activities you can do once in the mountains.

4. Make sure you have the correct equipment – Take plenty of warm clothes when you go skiing with kids as young children can be particularly sensitive to the cold – they also enjoy playing in the snow!! Clothing should include; a thermal layer on the top and bottom, a fleece layer and then an insulated + waterproof ski jacket and trousers.

MS top tip: Buy smaller children mittens instead of standard gloves, they’re far easier to put on!

5. Book ski lessons – Having the right ski instructor for your child is really important. On Maison Sport you get to choose from a huge variety of independent instructors, all with verified reviews. This allows you to make an informed decision on who is best suited for you and your child.
